硬币介绍

With half dollar production suspended during 1798-1800, the annual coinage of dollars during these years reached a peak for Draped Bust series. Calendar year 1799 recorded the highest total, though not all of these coins bore that date. The large number of dies prepared for 1798's coinage resulted in a number of leftovers, and much of 1799's output may have carried that date.  Q. David Bowers estimated that approximately 395,000 silver dollars were coined with the 1799 date, some of these being made the following year. This was a remarkable effort, given the primitive conditions found at the U. S. Mint, and it makes the 1799 silver dollar the most common date of the Draped Bust type. While Mint State survivors exist in very limited supply, lightly worn coins grading VF or XF are plentiful and provide a good pool for the type collector.  A total of 22 die marriages are known for 1799 silver dollars. Among the more unusual reverse dies is one into which the engraver mistakenly punched 15 stars instead of the requisite 13. He then attempted to cover his error by expanding nearby clouds to partially obscure the unwanted stars! This die was used in combination with both the overdate obverse and a normal one. Just two of the 1799 die marriages are considered rare: BB-151 and BB-154.阅读更多
