Introduction of Coins
Of the three U. S. Mints active in 1875, only San Francisco produced a substantial coinage of 20-cent pieces, and this was limited to 1875 alone. It proved to be the high point of this denomination's brief career. The fact that so many more examples were coined at San Francisco than at Carson City had more to do with the economic and political rivalry of these regions than with actual demand for the coins in circulation. Nevertheless, it is the 1875-S issue which is most available today across a wide range of grades, and type collectors are drawn to it for their sets. Though this date/mint is not common in gem condition, there are enough Mint State examples in lesser grades to supply the demand. There are several varieties for 1875-S, including misplaced dates and repunched mintmarks. These are often found in combination, but they are more popular than they are truly rare.Read More
