Introduction of Coins

Like most S-Mint coins of the 1940s, the 1944 S nickel was poorly made overall. The dies were used too long, and the typical piece is weakly struck in places, most notably at the steps of Monticello. Examples having 5FS or 6FS are rare. An innovation devised by two San Francisco Mint employees in 1944 was the dual-collar for mounting two die pairs in a single press. This nearly doubled the output of the smaller coins, though it may have contributed to each receiving a lesser impression. Repunched mintmarks are far fewer for 1944 S nickels than for other dates of the wartime composition.Read More
