Introduction of Coins
Proof sales remained lackluster in 1903, and the fact that this date is rare with contrasting devices certainly didn't encourage the purchase of additional pieces. Though a number of Cameo specimens have been certified, the depth of this contrast may not be equal to that of coins from the late 1890s. The typical 1903 proof nickel is sharply struck and quite brilliant. A small percentage of 1903 proof nickels were coined with the dies in medal alignment so that the obverse and reverse are oriented in the same direction. This is an unusual error and does attract some additional collector interest.Read More
